  3. I think he's talking about western Europe. For most of history the vast majority of people were illiterate and the only people who could read, were the nobles and the clergy. The only book people would come into contact with was the Bible. Not sure why the Bible is exclusively a "white man's book" when it was created in the middle east just like the Quran..
