The majority in the east were and are civilians, citizens of Ukraine, as they are not a constituted military army belonging to a nation, they are still civilians even if combatants. The first and majority of fire was directed into civilian areas which are war crimes, civilian areas in Donbas etc, is it any wonder they decided to defend themselves with anything they could. The Ukraine government also began to erase their Russian Orthodox religious rights, stole their icons, took property and banned their priests, their language rights, their history and heritage, also their right to be educated in a language they understood in schools, other ethnicities were also told they would have to speak Ukranian, and erase their own language heritage. All of those rights being abused is also a crime under International laws. To erase a people and their heritage is a form of genocide. That is recognised as such from the conflicts which NATO and USA have been involved in since the dissolution of the USSR. I am not a Russian propagandist, i am a medical professional who likes truth, justice and balance, if Ukraine is guilty of war crimes, and they say the same of Russia then to be balanced and honest so are the NATO nations who killed thousands of civilians in a multitude of attacks and invasions since Gulf War 1, that is what i am against. Dispute that and tell me i am wrong. If Russia is to be prosecuted in the ICC, so then should all the NATO and other nations who took part in all those wars and invasions since Gulf war 1 , especially the USA, considering they are the main instigators, but as we all know the USA never appears to let its perpetrators ever face an ICC or other court. The statue of Justice is blindfolded, so it cannot see to be biased, carries a Balance in one hand for fairness and a sword in the other, showing Justice MUST cut both ways.
If the west accuses and condemns others it must also accuse and condemn itself. It was the USA Obama. Biden and Nuland who instigated and planned the coup of 2014, that led to 30 people being kept trapped in a building as it burned down, blocked from escaping by the mob outside, that also led Poroshenko and others to begin to attack civilians in the east with military weapons, war crimes, that has led to the deaths of civilians on both sides, as you stated, the majority of whom are from the east and ethnically Russian. If the west wants to maintain its veneer of moral righteousness and integrity it must stand to be judged equally with Russia, just as the west ( currently adding to the flames of the current escalated conflict, all based on what the USA did in 2014 (for mercenary advantage not freedom or democracy) and on the current US administration of Nuland and Biden).

Russia has legitimate concerns regarding its safety and security, to exist as a nation in it's own right of over 1,000 years of history. NATO and the USA have blatantly and stupidly threatened that.
