Those Merchant Seamen were some of the bravest, and deserved the awards from Russia that were offered but refused for years by the British government (who never suffered at all) until finally many were awarded, and i always recall seeing a few of the veterans with their white berets with pride and respect for them as i had read about the suffering on PQ17 and the Murmansk convoy routes, it was terrible for them and the naval escort ships. How any survived the torpedoing amazes me to this day. My salute to your grandfather and all those brave souls.

@JeffreyGlover65 There were Russian actually Soviet Union troops and diplomats in the UK, i know for a fact that some Soviet intelligence officers were dropped by special forces Stirling aircraft after special training in the UK, some were also killed in aircraft that were shot down. Every allied nation had some troops here in ww2, as military attaches and planners, and advisers. There were even Germans in the UK operating with allied forces against the nazis. Ken Adam who worked on many of the James Bond films was a German fighter pilot in the RAF, so was his brother Denis and Peter Stevens who was a bomber pilot. Strange world isn't it

British paratroops bolstered the areas to the flank of the Battle of the Bulge and bridged the gaps cause by thousands of US troops surrendering or being cut off British Commandos trained your Rangers before they became Rangers in ww2 British SOE was so successful that the US personnel were taught how to operate in order to form the OSS British American French and other combinations of 3 man Jedburgh teams went in to France on D-Day to co ordinate Resistance operations. Britain and the Commonwealth troops, and allied forces with very few Americans stood alone for years until Pearl harbour where you got your asses kicked. The US did NOT save UK you formed part of an allied effort against an evil enemy the nazis which ironically the USA is now supporting in the nazi glorifying Ukraine terrorist, war criminal, corrupt, genocidal, racist regime, in an illegal coup and a war created by your insane POTUS and his demonic cartel. Also ironically that same idiot POTUS is attacking the one nation that did the most to defeat Nazis, and are doing it again.....Russia My great uncle was a Royal Marine Commando who fought from 1939-45 including D-Day. I am a Brit and know my own nation's history, the USA helped and we thanked your for it and paid through the nose for it until quite recently.

@irenepauls1194 That is why we had ww1 created by Germany, to get oil from Baghdad via the Baghdad Berlin Railway started in 1912, so they could conquer the Balkan and its few routes. Turkey being their ally would have helped if the Brits had not stopped them. WW2 Hitler wanted Turkey as an ally again to threaten the oil in the Gulf and the Suez canal. Turkey said no. So he got his oil wherever he could, Ploesti being a big one. Again Germany was stopped. Present day oil pipeline planned from the Gulf to Germany, via Syria and the Balkans (hence demonisation of Assad when he said NO) and attacks on Jugoslavia, Serbia especially which has as i said the few routes. Admitted by Biden in a gaff "i wanted to build a railway uh uh a pipeline to Germany from the Gulf" or similar words. German chancellor stated "i have achieved at least one ambition, the destruction of Jugoslavia"
