  3. I read that the USSR knew what was coming and played for time to re arm knowing Hitler would try to take Russia out as the Kaiser had done in ww1 by paying the Bolsheviks to cause revolution. It makes sense and is an alternative narrative, as Soviets knew the winter would stall Hitler in any attack.
