Not only SF did that. British SAS have done that in Malaya Borneo and up to date, passing on lessons to the USSF via the jungle school with British, Australian, New Zealand and even Rhodesian Instructors with jungle combat experience. My uncle was a Regular soldier in the UK and before i joined he taught me a lot of the tricks and techniques. It was fascinating learning all the small details, and he always said meticulous attention to detail will keep you alive longer ,"slapdash means dead" Those MACV SOG guys get my salute any day, that so many paid the ultimate price saddens me

@Kremit_the_Forg Son Tay raid, they spent millions looking for a night sight for quick reaction then found that Singlepoint in UK did one that had been available to civilians for years for about $15 It is a collimator red dot sight. I have my uncles version that he used in Northern Ireland and other conflicts. Look at any pic of the Son Tay raiders and they are usually easily spotted, Australian and other SAS used them in Vietnam too

I believe Pendine is also where someone famous was killed running a record attempt with a chain driven car, something like the Golden Arrow or similar, I have been on the sands it has an amazing history. TE Lawrence, also a Welsh man was fond of the Brough's. My great uncle was a Royal Marine Commando DR Despatch Rider used standard bikes in ww2 from D-Day but loved the Brough Superior for his own use. Fascinating to read your comment.

@williestyle35 British SAS also used the original M16 at the same time as the USAF Security Police, who were the original recipients, SAS in Borneo and Malaya c 1960-65, one of my great uncles was out there.

@bob_the_bomb4508 We drive on the left so that the coachman or guard can use a sword or long firearm ie shotgun or blunderbuss, from the right seat, as highwaymen would usually in theory come from the bushes to the left There is also the explanation that when coaches travelled through the narrow lanes and roads of the period the driver would not be hit in the face by foliage, bushes, trees, at the left side, particularly Mail Coaches and the Post Horn to warn ahead was quite long too. Many explanations. I noticed most American western Stagecoaches drivers are also on the right with the brake bar outboard of where he sits to use with the right foot.

That folding stock can bite the unwary when folding and opening out. I had to familiarise with many older weapons and current ones as part of a training program and nearly got bitten by it. Nice weapon to fire although the models i fired were L2A3 and L34A1 standard Sterling and silenced version not the Patchett.

These guns were mounted on SAS land rovers in the 1950's too, the Short Wheelbase versions Mk 1's, in a twin mount for the front passenger with shield and bulletproof small windows in them, and also a single mount. Google "SAS land rover with vickers K pic" and it should show quite a few views.

@robert-trading-as-Bob69 The ones i know of are LRDG, SAS, PPA, Indian Long Range Squadron (trained by LRDG did some ops with them but not part of LRDG), Special Interrogation Group, Greek Sacred Squadron, Free French Squadron, Special Boat Section, there are wisps of information on other small units but too hard to find them, so far, research might open them up in the future. Good hunting.

@robert-trading-as-Bob69 They certainly were interesting people, as was the Small-Scale Raiding Force. I read a book some time ago about a British unit that did Beach Recces as swimmers founded by a Canadian that surveyed most of the beaches for the ops in the Med and Normandy i wish i could remember the title. if i find it again i will let you know.

I imagined a modernised version of the FN/FAL as used by the British Army as the L1A1 SLR from that very familiar cocking handle, later replaced by a round knob for faster cocking in British use, i really like the HCAR design and layout, would be good as with the SLR if it had a straight 30 round magazine as used on the L1A1 from the L4A4 Bren in 7.62. looks like a pleasure to shoot. I got to fire a privately owned SLR years after they went out of service with the British Army i could happily carry a HCAR instead of L85. Nice video thanks for showing this.

@ganndeber1621 No4's were still in use by the Air Cadets in UK in 1972 and later, my father won his RAF Marksman crossed rifles with one, and re qualified on it 3 times before going over to the L1A1 7.62, and winning it again. There were 2 grades ATC Marksman a horizontal rifle under a crown, and RAF marksman the Crossed Lee Enfield rifles. The Army Cadets had 4 grades Rifle, Rifle under a Star, Rifle under a Crown, and crossed rifles. My mother also qualified for her crossed rifles all on Lee Enfield Mk4's. I have fired (No4's, L39, L42, L4A4 Bren, L1A1 SLR,) SA80 range, M16, (Sterling), and others including sniper rifles and some Parker-Hale sporter Lee Enfield action rifles, mostly in Reserve service and a lot of the earlier rifles which were privately owned.(in brackets above)

@ganndeber1621 My father's ATC Squadron had a P14 rifle in the armoury, in the 1970's, and 14 Lee Enfield No4 Drill Purpose rifles, but used the No4 on the ranges before the SLR and SA80's came in to get their Marksmanship badges.

@ganndeber1621 I know the difference, and have handled an SMLE owned privately, by a ww1 vet, now passed. I have handled and fired quite a few bolt action Lee Enfield type weapons, and Martini action too. My great grandfather and grandfather were both expert riflemen who had served in the Ox and Bucks LI, my father also an expert shot with rifle, pistol, smg. All of them owned at some time various rifles and i fired all of them. The chap who posted this might have mistaken a Short Magazine Lee Enfield as a generic term for Lee Enfield, best to ask him to clarify.

I would like to see this concept brought up to date now with the recent changes to ammunition suggested in the USA which seems to be closer to the 7mm, with new technology i could see this replacing the L85's. Wishful thinking

Would have improved this if it had a telescopic pistol grip to make it longer with a sliding extension, it looks a bit small to me as it stands

@cgi2002 I am lucky in that i am totally ambidextrous, and don't seem to have a dominant eye either, due to various factors in my childhood and upbringing. I have met a few people with the same ability, a good few of them are piano players strangely enough

There was one of his in an Arkansas museum as i recall from an article in a very old shooting magazine from the USA, along with a gun used by the Cherokee Kid, they also mentioned a Bowie original that had been given to a Captain Tunstall by James Bowie. I do not know if Tunstall was the same one connected to BTK aka William Bonney

British SAS in ww2 on D-Day ops preferred the paratroop version of the M-1 carbine.

My great uncle was a Royal Marine Commando who landed on D-Day, he was ostensibly a Don-R aka a Despatch Rider once off the beaches attached to a command unit, but his motorcycle and that of his oppo (opposite number, and best friend) was destroyed when both bikes were hit by 20mm cannon fire on the beach. His friend was also killed in front of him. He then operated a Vickers K moved inland and taught the nazis a lesson or two, then worked on the ground for a period and then acquired another motorcycle which he then reverted to his security/despatch role a very dangerous but vital job. He rarely talked about it but when i became a soldier myself opened up a bit, to teach me valuable lessons, he also suffered ptsd all his life and it helped him to talk out some of his demons. He was a true Commando and fought from Normandy to Germany.

I just did a quick check on COPP and there are some decent references including an A-Z of the members, which has opened up another line of interest for me, thanks, i had forgotten about COPP, SSRF, Roger Courtney, Clogstoun-Williams i must go back and read up on them again. The Cockleshell Heroes was one op i concentrated on, and having done a stint of canoeing with my great uncle in a Klepper down part of the Welsh coast years ago, my admiration for them grew enormously. One book is referred to in the A-Z online "Stealthily By Night", i don't think it was the one i read, but i must try and get a copy.

The Russians started issuing their aircrews with a defence rifle having lost a crewman in Syria murdered by militia, the US forces now also have break down rifle in their new survival kits so i am informed. The Russians/Soviets also had a pistol in their NAZ survival kits which fired 3 types of shot as well as a stock made from the holster

Vickers K were still in use into the 1950s 1960s with SAS on land rover swb short wheelbase patrol vehicles, i also think the Belgian sas also had them on Minerva land rovers for a short time. I have also see pics of the ground use ones post war

The RAF formed the RAF Regiment for airfield and other unit defences to allow Army troops to be re-deployed as it was originally down to the Army to defend the airfields. The ground defences used Bren guns in twin mounts on a frame and the Brens had drum magazines, supplemented by Vickers K's and even Lewis guns in twin mounts RAF Regiment, Airborne and SAS also used the Vickers of both types. Paddy Mayne of SAS saw two friends killed so grabbed a Vickers and magazines and took out the Germans clearing a farmhouse by himself. The Royal Marines, Royal Navy and RAF Maritime Air Sea Rescue also had the Vickers K mounted and infantry role models. The twin mount was also used on Land Rover's of the SAS (re-formed 1947) in 21 SAS in the 1950's.
