  1. Yes, that's what I remember. Pie shop, chip shop, grocers, greengrocers, hardware shop, wallpaper shop, car accessory shop, Co-Op, betting shop. 2 corner shops, all with about a five minute walk. One coal fire in the front downstairs room, freezing back and burning face, but what great toast. Frost patterns on the inside of upstairs windows in winter.

  2. I wouldn't want to live in these properties in Burnley. It'd cost a lot to put them right but would I feel safe? No. As a kid we had terraced houses with outside tippler toilets but not as bad as these yards or empty houses. A lot were pulled down and replaced. There's a lot still standing and modernised. Mine has a tiny garden and looks out onto council houses with large gardens but many streets here have just a back yard with a communal ginnel which the council gated all of them for security. It's not too bad here compared to a few streets away which just have a yard. Further up from here the rear of the shops were a mess, with freezers and black plastic bags, the council cleared it away. I don't know why people living opposite looking at it from the street could keep looking at that for years. That's how it starts then other people start dumping stuff. Strange how they're all fast food shops creating the mess. Bins with stinking fish and perhaps meat absolutely crawling with maggots out overnight on Sunday when I walked past on the main road ready to be collected on Monday. They stopped putting them out on Sunday after I complained to the health department.

  3. Is it safe? No planning permission, no building regulations to adhere to and no safety inspection. Suppose a stone badly placed fell off and injured someone. Who would be liable? Him? Council? Land owner? It's too fraught with legal problems.

  4. I don't get it. He's homeless but builds a castle? No place to live? No money? How can he afford to eat? Farmers want people to pick fruit and veg. A few years ago it was advertised pick daffodils £250 per week. On Radio 4 Farming Today a Slovakian guy picked strawberries then moved to Yorkshire to pick apples. Why doesn't he do it? I would. Better than living rough with no money. With a bit of money he could join the Dry Stone Walling Association if he likes walling, unemployed member £25 then take his initial walling test and try to get employed with a professional or semi-professional member.
