Maybe that's how she liked it said.

Probably more weight and more wind drag.

Assuming they are to scale which it looks like they are 3 didn't look enough. Very interesting explanations given.

Does anybody watch adverts and think, I must buy that?

A marvellous piece of machinery. I got my Mum's sewing machine, a Jones shuttle machine, the CS Family model with CWS on it, Co-Operative Wholesale Society. I looked up some information on it. This model was first made around 1935. The company was acquired by Brother Industries of Japan in 1968, their offices are there now. My Dad put a motor and belt drive on it which I removed and put the handle back on as I didn't want to accidentally sew my fingers together. They were made at Guide Bridge near Manchester, England which is where I live now.

If interested why not take up amateur radio? And I don't mean C.B. You will learn things to take the exam then it's up to you where you take that knowledge. I built my own receiver and transmitter for both voice and Morse Code communication. Even my low power can go a long way, 1 Watt out on Morse got me Sicily and Bulgaria and a week later did the same with two more stations in Bulgaria and Italy with my ½ Watt, both around 1300 miles. G4GHB.

What a bungled attempt. The journey across to Dakar should have shown how important radio communication and direction finding was. Were the ships not in communication with each other to check on her progress? Telegram arrived too late. They were already in trouble and maybe being pig headed they wouldn't turn back, after all they had come thousands of miles successfully. They didn't want to admit defeat? No signal from the second ship meant they were in even deeper trouble. Was it foolish to carry on but could they turn back, had they enough fuel? Three different times zones adding to confusion. As a radio amateur now we all use Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) or sometimes called Universal Time Co-ordinated (UTC) to avoid confusion. Why wasn't she advised to not have the 500 kHz aerial removed? I'm amazed the radio operators on Howland Island had no spare batteries for such an important expedition. They must surely have calculated their transmit and receive times and battery capacity needed. If I took radio gear into the hills I'd work out how long I could operate and would I need spare batteries to extend my operating time. A life raft on board could have made all the difference but I suppose they didn't have one to save weight. G4GHB.
