We don't know if they performed nuclear fusion as we didn't see that they tested for the byproducts of fusion, but we also don't know that they didn't. They could have fused some amount of deuterium nuclei. Not knowing doesn't mean it didn't occur. They may have even tested off camera. If they fused a small number of nuclei, they wouldn't be suffering from acute radiation poisoning as it could be barely above background radiation.
