  1. Switching to over-the-air digital television (and wireless phone service as well) was mandated by the FCC to free up analog signals for other uses. This had nothing to do with the transition to HDTV. The CCFLs are replaceable with LED backlighting on older panels. If you're reasonably intelligent and have an afternoon free, you can do it for less than $30. It's been my experience, however, that it's the inverter more than the CCFLs that fail. The inverters typically run you about $100, even then. Pardon me for being blunt, but I think you're forming an opinion about things you really don't know much about.

  2. John Salazar You shouldn't look down your nose at people when it's you making ill-informed conclusions. For instance, you stated, "...I'm just saying the government shoved that shit down our throats before ANYONE was ready for it." And how do you figure that's accurate? They were giving away digital boxes for OTA television for free -- and digital OTA was the only thing the government was involved in. Unless you had a TV from the 90s, chances are your TV supported digital signals and didn't even need the free box. This change affected only the absolute vast minority using antenna TV. I'm also sure that you weren't aware that this is a global change until Alan mentioned it, not just one in the US. The US started its changeover 4 years after the beginning of the changeover. Your knowledge on which you base your theories is sorely lacking. Accept that and be more open to learning rather than being too preoccupied with being butthurt because you were wrong about something.

That card can't even put out 60 FPS in most games at just 1080p, forget 60 FPS @ 4K. But you spent, supposedly, $4,000 on your laptop, so I imagine you have SLI and top end cards.   7. ***** When it comes to budget products, you're generally taking more of a chance of a product not working or not meeting/exceeding life expectancy. LCD panels and the processor/PCB are all made by a total of only about 70 companies worldwide. Each company grades its panels with a letter grade depending on that panel's quality. When you buy a budget product, you're typically getting a C-rated panel while when you pay more, you're getting an A or A+ panel. This grading is given on anything from marks on the glass to backlight bleeding. Most of the time, when a monitor goes out, a replacement of the inverter or CCFLs (in which case I recommend replacing it with LED strip backlighting) will allow the monitor to continue to function perfectly.

  9. Robbie_Zombie You need to spend $2,000+ on a PC to game at 4K at any kind of playable frame rates. The XBO and PS4 will simply scale up like they do now when a game is played at 1280x720 on a 1920x1080 display, but there will be a lot of scaling up on a 3840x2160 (4K) display. With that being said, you're going to also get more pixel density on a 4K display creating a crisper overall image, even though one pixel being pushed out of the graphics buffer on the console will be displayed to several pixels on the TV. The summary is that when it comes down to it, you're going to get a better quality of image, but only just. If you're going to get it for 4K video content, then go for it, but don't pick it up just for gaming purposes -- you'll be disappointed.

  10. Danny Vaca I honestly don't get it. I love my PS4, and I'm going to eventually also get an XBO at some point as well. This is in addition to my gaming PC (which will be getting a rebuild soon enough once DDR4 attains higher speeds to compensate for the higher latencies). That's my prerogative, but I don't try to pretend that they're objectively smarter buys than a PC, because they're not. No one's reason to get a console should be performance-to-cost ratio, and if it is, then they're sorely misinformed.

  11. roni pala Yeah, you really do. You need at least two top-end video cards, and that's going to run you a minimum of about $1,400 by itself, not including any other components. That'll land you somewhere in the 60 FPS range on most titles with moderate to high settings at 4K.

And when you're going that high end, you can't cheap out on your proc or MB, because you need full 16x/16x for your PCIe lanes as well as you have to have a very high end CPU to not be CPU capped and of course fast RAM to match. Curious question on the side: do you have the two Samsung SSDs on a RAID? I'm planning my next build to replace the i7 920 setup that I'm running right now, and I'm going to do 6 SSDs in RAID 0 using a PCIe RAID controller.
