Martha Fogelin He understood the drive for political parties as being part of human nature, but he felt that they would run amok unchecked in a republic whereas under a monarchy they were more naturally controlled. That's not to say he preferred to have a monarchy, but that he felt that the health of the republic required strict control of the power and scope of political parties. I must say, he certainly wasn't wrong.

@pattyayers It's not your mistakes or flaws, but the grandeur of your wins that count. You may make fewer mistakes in your life than some great people, but your name also won't be a household name after you die.

@craigcrawford6595 Parties evolve, are born and die; their ideologies shifting here and there. The Democrat and Republican parties today share similarities in names alone to the same-named parties even 75 years ago, let alone 230 years ago.
