  1. 日本 or 日本田is Japan as a nation. (田 is symbolic for land, logogram of a rice paddy. 日 is symbolic for sun; originally written like ⊙. 本 is symbolic of roots of a tree which is 木 with the line denoting importance to the root). Thus, lit. sun root land, or land of the rising sun. Since these characters were Chinese in origin, the writing for "Japan" is also Chinese in origin, and from China's perspective, Japan is from where the sun would rise. 日本語 is Japanese as a language. (語 is language, logogram of a paper with writing and a table). 日本人 is a Japanese person. (人 is a person, logogram of legs and torso). Just an FYI.
