When I first read about Easy Company & found out they had trained in Toccoa, GA it kinda freaked me out. I have been in Toccoa, GA many times. Didn't live there but I worked there & lived nearby. Just across the SC line there is a little town called Westminster. And if you leave Westminster on Hwy 76 going North the next little town is Long Creek. Well, in 1991 I helped my stepdad Billy build a house in between Westminster & Long Creek. It was off of Old Hurricane Rd. If the driveway still bears the same name its Chevis Mtn Rd. Chevis was the name of one of our dogs. He was a black lab & he was the smartest dog I've ever know. And our family had a lot of dogs at different times but Chevis you could talk to like he was a person. Of course he couldn't talk back but you could always tell he understood what you were saying. But anyway, while we were building the house I was also working nights in Toccoa. I worked thru a temp service at a plant named Dempster. They built garbage trucks. Or the rear end part of the garbage trucks if you get me. We got the cab & chassis part already built & added the rest. So they did a lot of welding. But I wasn't part of that. I worked with whole bunch of others getting them cleaned up to be painted & then after they were painted we did touch up painting & put all the safety stickers on 'em. Greased all the bearings & the "recycle trucks" got a rubber mat that had to be riveted or secured with gun type fastener that used 22 short blanks to shoot the rivet thru the rubber mat & into the metal. This was by no means an easy job & you had to know & learn a lot of things to be able to do everything that needed doing. But anyway, when I think of Toccoa, there are so many things that come to my mind. And when I Iearned Easy Company trained there for special ops in WW2, idk why, but it made me proud that I know the place. Even though I knew the place 50 years later, they were a big part of stopping Nazi Germany from taking over the world. And as soon as Germany was defeated & surrendered then the US could concentrate solely on the war with Japan & considering their brutal attack at Pearl Harbor they were a much hated enemy. Probably more hated & more feared cuz of not only Pearl Harbor but cuz their culture was so different & didn't seem scared at all to die in battle. And felt they gained more honor by dying in battle rather than suffering a defeat & withdrawing & living to fight another day. And Kamikazes didn't help either. And some of the most brutal fighting was between the US & Japan. It's sad & says a lot when an American soldier shoots an enemy soldier that is trying to surrender for fear that the enemy soldier is attempting some type of sabotage. Or Kamikaze on foot so to speak. But also when I think of Toccoa, it's not the Falls I think of but Lake Hartwell. There is also a river right there too. Tugaloo if I remember correctly. But everyone there pronounced it different from the spelling. Most that I heard say it, said it as though it were Tagula instead of Tugaloo. Idk, I never argued but thought it strange.

Wow. Sounds like he just needed a better English teacher. I had that exact same problem but at an age too young for the Marine Corp to be an option. The very last of my 5th grade year we had moved from South Alabama to Stone Mtn, GA(Suburbs of Atlanta). And the main teacher I had was Mrs Breiner. She taught English & Math & at this point in my life I had never really had a teacher that I completely & hopelessly despised anywhere even close to the point in which I despised this woman. I tried to like her, I really did. But the more I tried to like her the more she would stomp & beat on my last frickin nerve! I had NEVER encountered a person I truly hated more & what was worse I couldn't explain it, even to myself, why I hated this woman so much! And finally, finally the summer vacation! Whew! Was never happier for summer vacation. After summer was over, I had to go to see what teacher I would have for home room & stuff. And when I saw Mrs Breiner at the 6th grade booth, I almost became physically ill! OMG, the last 2-3 months I had with Mrs Breiner in 5th grade was a cake walk compared to having her as my "home room" teacher for the entirety of my 6th grade year. 6th grade was really what made me hate her! And still to this day, there is nothing specific that I can say made me hate her. The closest I can explain it is, imagine getting taught by a person that should be teaching 1st or 2nd grade. Her teaching English & reading was sub par. She didn't explain stuff well. She was a better math teacher than an English teacher by far. It wasn't until I reached 7th grade & Ms Jones started explaining English do's & don'ts that I really started grasping things. However, I didn't get a better Math teacher than Mrs Breiner until High School. In GA high school started at 8th grade. My first 2 quarters I had Pre-Algebra & it was taught by the soccer coach. I didn't understand it a bit. We moved & I got Ms Henderson for the last of Pre-Algebra & Algebra. After failing my first 2 quarters of Pre-Algebra I aced my last quarter & Ms Henderson told me to take Algebra 1 & she would take care of me. When I signed up for Algebra 1 they gave me a different teacher. I told my Mom & my counselor Both that I wanted Ms Henderson & refused to go to the other math class until they changed it. She made them redo my schedule. BEST MATH TEACHER I ever had!!! Math was my best subject cuz of her.
It's just such a shame this guy went to war in the Marines & became a hero because he had a crappy teacher. That is such a sad story but I praise the fact he made it through!! I guess the Good Lord has a path for us all, whether you know it or believe it.
