I'm glad that in this video they make the remark that "For the Southern States that it WASN'T just a simple case of morality when it came to having slaves. The Large Plantations of the South were dependent upon the slave labor in order to make a profit on the crops they were growing. And it was much more of an ECONOMIC ISSUE than a moral issue as most had grown up with slaves being a normal thing. And to give up their slaves was like taking not only the money they spent to purchase their slaves but the money their farms would make as well because they couldn't plant the fields without the help of their slaves. AND FURTHERMORE, the fact that they would fight a war for 4-5 years & have to give up their slaves put the South into a depression so deep & dark that the poverty from it would last for almost a century following the end of the Civil War. And the poverty of those areas, the blacks would suffer even more due to segregation. It wasn't until segregation was abolished that area schools actually received adequate funding due to states having to provide area schools for blacks & whites. When once abolished the economic value of only having to provide one area school instead of two would make the cost of the schools go down while actually providing better school facilities & faculty. And, of course, since the schools for blacks got less funding it was a huge improvement for black education and although some of the white parents may have complained it was also beneficial for white kids cuz the money that was going to black schools was all going to one school but they also were able to interact with the black students AND COULD LEARN TO NOT BE AFRAID OF BLACKS & COULD SEE FOR THEMSELVES THAT the blacks had the same problems & issues they did. And other than skin color weren't all that different from themselves!! And if segregation had never taken place racial bias & racial tensions would have dissipated much sooner in this country. For although the Civil War may have freed the blacks from slavery but it did NOT do a whole lot to help them after slavery. My Mom told me that her Great Grandfather had slaves & when they were freed they didn't know where to go or how to earn a living. And so they stayed on his farm as share croppers so they would have a home & food to eat. I'm sure that wasn't the case for MOST slaves. I guess it all depended upon how they were treated. If they had been treated badly they would have probably left asap. And just trusted that God would lead them to a better place where everything would be better. I know that's what I would have done if I had been treated badly & then given my freedom.
However, I find it totally f'cked up that a nation that started off claiming to be "a free country" could actually have slaves. AND the fact that we had to actually fight a Civil War for 4-5 years to get rid of slavery is even MORE f'cked up. We SHOULD have figured out a better way.
And then we had segregation for almost another 100 years after the Civil War is even more stupid. It wasn't until black & white kids were in the same classrooms learning & growing together that the children of both races could see that the same problems they are dealing with are the same problems the other race deals with. Problems like parents having alcoholism & marital difficulties, divorce, drug abuse, racist parents, & common bonds being built on football teams & other team athletics. Personal relationships with those of other races creating trust between the races & knowing that they are just trying to live & prosper like yourself is something kids were NOT learning during segregation and that created constant tension between the races. And because of that blacks didn't get a lot of the opportunities that whites did. Leading to even more tension & things would spiral out of control lots of times due to that & alcohol leading people to make bigger issues out of things that really shouldn't be an issue. I have experienced that in myself when drinking so I know it happens. And I consider myself fairly level headed when it comes down to it. And that's also why I quit drinking cuz I realized that alcohol can tend to make you react violently when there is really no need. Well that's my story and how I feel about matters. And btw, I was born in Montgomery, AL. My father was a racist & as a child I preached to him that he was wrong for being that way. Never changed his mind & he never changed mine. I still loved him but we butted heads on that matter. My Mom was maybe a racist to begin with but if she was she wasn't hard nosed about it. And after she got with my step-dad, Billy I never heard any racism out of either. Heard Billy make fun of a lot of them. He'd say, "they got it so bad they don't allow no colored TV's & no mixed drinks! Which was his way of calling them "stupid racists" without actually saying it.
Ok. I'm hoping I said everything I wanted to say. Cuz I need to go. Thanks for the video.
