  5. Gas flaring is routine in the industry. It can’t be stored, so the excess gas needs to be burned off.

  7.  @apocalypticweasel9078  it’s a resource that’s certainly being wasted, but it’s not an actual value until it’s sold. And the world is paying higher energy costs, so it’s a shame all around.

  8.  @timataruba  it’s not pumped. I’m not an expert in the field, but I imagine it’d be like letting air out of a balloon. You can’t really just stop the flow.

  11.  @ingridschmid1709  sanctions backfired on the West. Russia still makes a ton of money on energy while the West pays more. Russia’s Plan A was to take Ukraine in a few weeks to spare everyone suffering. Plan B is this long, grinding war that leads to more suffering.

  13.  @ingridschmid1709  if Putin really didn’t care about them, then why doesn’t he just steamroll through everything? It’s because he sees the people of East Ukraine as fellow Russians. You have to ask, if Ukraine cared about Ukrainians, then why did they terrorize east Ukraine for the past 8 years?

  15.  @ingridschmid1709  western Ukraine absolutely terrorized eastern Ukraine for the past 8 years. That’s why Azov Battalion was formed in the first place. The Donbass has been fighting the Kiev regime without Russian intervention for the last 8 years. If you’re going to dismiss this, then you are full of western propaganda. And Russia has not even mobilized its full military yet. If it wanted to run roughshod, it could devastate Ukraine, but believe it or not, Putin wants them in tact as much as possible. His stated objectives were to “de-militarize and de-nazify.” It was not to destroy and conquer.

  16. Yup. With gas, you can’t just “shut down” the hole or store it, so you have to burn off the excess. It’s common practice in the industry.
