  1. Heinlein's Starship Troopers was an excellent political examination of our current failing society and what could replace it, a kind of classical liberalism dream. Many SF writers over the decades tried to refute it like The Forever War, but never quite succeeded until Ender's Game - the authorities will absolutely manipulate you to do horrifying things.

  2. Rome was much more politically healthy when they were more an agrarian property holding army. The Marian Reform screwed that up, although it was a temporary boost in military prowess.

  3. It was mainly due to Christianity. Its a fairly unique religion in that it has a very strong sense of historical progress and is tolerant, unlike leftist Marxists - they won't usually go around burning random books (maybe the pope might burn some heretical religious texts).

  4. It might have been Zeihan, but somebody made a good point that our political parties are undergoing transformations, Repubs are basically becoming the populist worker party and Dems are becoming fully controlled by Neoliberals. That party might even fracture with their more far left.
