  1. Toyota can absolutely afford to buy back the cars. They manufactured them at a cost, and sold them at a significant markup. They can't possibly not have the money. Also, if they can afford to offer such steep discounts, they can afford to buy back the cars.

  2.  @Zripas  Interesting point and analogy, if that's the case. But I dunno. If I were a car manufacturer, and I knew there would be no ongoing ink-cartridge-like expenses (such as subscription fees so the headlights and brakes could work) because the people wouldn't be driving the car very long, because - as I knew darn well - there's no infrastructure to even keep the car on the road, I'd want to make all my profit on the initial sale. And if they can offer 80% discounts and still make a profit, their pockets are plenty deep.
