  1. Wellington pre-scouted the battlefield at Waterloo. It's difficult to call it "luck" when you have picked the ideal ground to fight the battle you want to fight, in the way you want to fight it... Famously, Wellington said "It was a damned close-run thing." But one has to consider that the understatement was very firmly part of British culture at this time and that the British were on the defensive and had held against superior numbers all day. Had the Prussians not arrived, my sense is that it would have been inconclusive, which does ask wider questions... But in the end, the French left the field with 50% casualties... Something I'm not certain was entirely "thanks to the Prussians".
