Given the increased lethality of modern artillery - the stuff that will ensure every inch of an area the size of a football field is hit with shrapnel - it seems to me that the only way infantry will be viable in the future is if they have 100% armour coverage. The only way you can achieve 100% coverage in a practical way is to off-load the weight from the body, i.e. onto an exoskeleton. (Even now, where the political demand is for 0 casualties and soldiers are suffering more casualties from weight than enemy action, the need is clear...) As with everything, this will involve a compromise - it will make treating injuries more difficult in the event of a penetration - but given a choice between a battalion being literally wiped-out by a single artillery strike and the occasional extra fatality... It's not hard to see which comprise would be made...
