I was aware of the G3 conversions - they were built for room clearance because they had a better "one shot knockdown" than 9mm. SAS doctrine is, apparently, very biased towards one-shot-kill...

@bubba200874426 No, was "good authority". 😉 Related/unrelated, bro did a couple of tours in Iraq in the infantry... Stories about the lack of CQB knockdown power of 5.56 are not exaggerated. To be clear, "knockdown" is specific, as in, "knockdown and never get up". People who've been there prefer 1 shot, because that's literally all they may get; this is what motivated the development of .458 SOCOM. These were just the early 90s effort to plug that gap (see also 6.8 SPC). My guess is that SAS/SBS have switched to .458 too for this role, but have no insight, just pure speculation.

@theobuzat9091 Okay, cool ☺️ (Edit: like I said, I have no insight into current doctrine/gear.)

@darrengarcia4937 When you unload on someone with a Mini-mi, hit them 14 times and they move 30 feet before collapsing - and they had an RPG and could have taken out half a section - THAT is when the "notorious deadliness" of 5.56 shows it's true colours. Do you think the demands for alternative calibres came out of nowhere? That soldiers want bigger, heavier bullets (that they will have to carry...) for "no reason"? Please don't try to contradict my brother's experience with your theoretical knowledge. At extremely close ranges, because of the small size and high velocity, 5.56 can go clean through. Hydrostatic shock may incapacitate after 1 shot, but it can be very variable. What we're talking about is perfectly demonstrated by the latest video by Donut Operator - exchange of 9mm at less than 5 metres. Perp got perforated but was able to run past and shoot an officer at least *twice*, before eventually bleeding to death. Do you thing that cop wishes he had something bigger than a 9mm?

@timbirch4999 Exactly - this was part of the reasoning put to me... ☺️

@darrengarcia4937 Again, theory vs. real-world experience. If you think getting angry at me is going to get me to concede, then, I'm afraid you're sadly mistaken.

@darrengarcia4937 And your complete lack of experience does? 🤦♂️ The move to 6.8 is nothing to do with accuracy-at-range, it's entirely about armour penetration - 5.56 is just too light to punch through modern body armour, but they don't want to go back to 7.62×51, because that would massively reduce carrying capacity, so they're going for something in the middle, ideally with new tech that means no reduction in rounds carried. You're just embarrassing yourself at this point.

@darrengarcia4937 LOL, they say that in EVERY weapons programme spec and they never achieve it - or achieve such a marginal improvement that they stick with M16/M4/5.56 It's literally a meme at this point. Beside, if you'd been following, you'd know that the accuracy is coming from the built-in ballistic computer, rather than the bullet 😂🤦♂️ S stands for System - a system is made from many parts. The bullet is only one of them.
