The Ranger and Surveyor programs also helped gain a better understanding of the radiation environment before sending people. James Van Allen himself said the radiation belts weren’t a barrier to human space travel. People like Sibrel lie and overstate the danger of the Van Allen belts to instill personal incredulity.

  4. To those who think Aldrin punching Sibrel means Sibrel was right, here’s more context for the situation. Sibrel lied to Aldrin to arrange an in person meeting under false pretenses. Sibrel was already known for harassing astronauts. Sibrel proceeds to harass Aldrin. Aldrin tries to walk away from the confrontation but Sibrel follows and continues to harass Aldrin. Sibrel ultimately backs Aldrin up against a wall, gets in his face, and calls him a liar, a coward, and a thief. Only then does Aldrin punch Sibrel. Does that not seem like Aldrin was provoked and at least was partially acting in self defense? Imagine if someone harassed a veteran who had served in multiple combat deployments and got in their face and called them a liar, a coward, and a thief. Do you not think that person may react in a similar way to Aldrin?

In 1968, Russia’s Zond 5 mission sent animals, including two tortoises, around the moon and back. They returned safely. Also, you’re ignoring the fact that people have been going to space since 1961. Space stations have existed since the early 70s and the ISS has been continuously inhabited for over two decades.
