  7. Rather indirectly. The Big Bang theory was already hypothesized but this antenna played a major role in confirming the theory. That shell looking thing was a radio telescope called the Holmdel Horn Antenna. They noticed that no matter what direction they pointed it, they picked up a uniform, faint microwave signal. This would be recognized as the cosmic microwave background (CMB). The discovery of the CMB was pivotal evidence for confirming the Big Bang theory.

  12. That would be very risky because you’d basically be flying blind if you didn’t have the rocket itself knowing exactly where it is. That would be like programming an autonomous car to drive somewhere purely based on distances and turn angles. If an error gets introduced, there’s no way to detect and correct it.

Also NASA receives about 0.5% of the national budget. If you’re going to be upset over what you think is wasteful spending, NASA’s budget is just a drop in the bucket.

  17. Despite how big the sun is, from the earth, it’s still a very small target to hit. Also remember that anything on earth is traveling fast enough to remain in orbit around the sun. This means that most objects that get sent towards the sun will just miss and remain in orbit around it.
