  2. That’s not entirely true. The onboard computers were less powerful than a cellphone, but the computational heavy lifting for the missions was performed by ground based computers.

  3. That would be very risky because you’d basically be flying blind if you didn’t have the rocket itself knowing exactly where it is. That would be like programming an autonomous car to drive somewhere purely based on distances and turn angles. If an error gets introduced, there’s no way to detect and correct it.
