Regarding looking out for other people: I've taught my kids to be generous and helpful toward other people (and recognize when someone's trying to abuse your goodwill).. and I just got a good example of what it can lead to. I got suddenly unemployed (big contract got dropped) and was quite anxious about it. Through my friends and ex-coworkers I got 4 job offers within a month... they wanted to help me because I had had their backs. One old ex-coworker even told me that "you were one of the very few people who didn't treat me like trash when I was going through rough times". Don't be a doormat but be kind and supportive. You never know when you're the one in need.

Comments in code are great in at least one situation: when something is first done in the obvious way and then there's a subtle bug or other roadblock why it can't be done the obvious way, a comment explaining why it was done in a weird way is good so nobody goes and "fixes" it before checking if the problem still exists.

  5. I've been this way almost all my life as well.. and I feel like it might even be something inherent with ADHD.. I can see how authoritarian parenting will exacerbate it.. but I've been thinking it in this way: ADHD causes our brains to not form habits / routines very easily and our brain is still thinking about alternative ways even after 100th time of doing something.. so when someone tells you that "you must do this".. the first reaction is almost curious "really? do you think there are no other ways?" .. this curiosity can turn into defiance with authoritarian parenting but I feel like the seed is there with ADHD.

I used to write perl 20 years ago when it was popular and I was eagerly waiting for Perl 6 .. they seemed to want to solve every problem and be everything.. and the development didn't seem to go anywhere. I haven't checked it out for years but I'm not in any way surprised it turned out to be gremlins all the way down.

Both of my grandfathers fought in the winter war ("talvisota" as mentioned in the video is literally translated talvi = winter, sota = war) they have both passed away now but I remember listening to their tales of the war as a young kid (they had some crazy stories). I bet all Finns still know the concept of "sisu" (I would describe it as determination and tenacity even when faced with unfavourable odds) and we take pride in it... we'll fight 'til the bitter end.

If not, you must also recognise that things being better now does not mean that there is no failing anymore. Also, this failing is not just how we (try to) treat the illnesses, it's also in how we value people and their traits. That IS heavily influenced by the socio-economic system that surrounds us. Your failure to recognise systemic problems and brandishing of "personal responsibility" at struggling people is just another example of how people are indoctrinated in the current system and are therefore blind to its shortcomings.

  10.  @OurWonderland  Wise words. There's the other way of guilt tripping yourself too like "I have a roof over my head and food on my table, what am I complaining about?" That doesn't mean that there can't be trauma, suffering, sorrow, fear, anxiety, depression.. I'm not sure but as a person who always felt like I was "in the way".. I learnt how to become unseen, unheard and generally inconsequential as a child.. and I know people have experienced this in varying degrees.. and that carries to this day to belittle everything that goes on in my life, both successes and tragedies. It takes a lot to start seeing things as they are.. not tinted and biased by our internal self-worth (or the lack of thereof)

I don't give a flying f about helix being written in rust.. but I think what they did with their version of vim motions is more consistent and the space leader key with decent mnemonics (like <space> f for file picker, <space> b for buffers etc) is just good UX. I think they genuinely managed to take that part of vim and make it better.. also, defaults are GREAT. Yeah, the customization isn't there but it's a damn good effort.

There has been and is a massive ongoing effort to demonize criticism of the current economic system and god forbid even entertain the thought of socialism. It's no wonder we have internalized it.   28. I've been a dev for 30 years, it's one of my hobbies as well. I've been trying to get better every day but I still feel average. Why? Because of the complexity of multiple conflicting goals. I very, very rarely get to feel like "this is the best solution" because everything is a compromise. I think there are better and worse compromises but most of the time what I feel is a slight disappointment. Also, it doesn't help that every OS, every programming language and every API is also a bunch of more of less annoying compromises. I wish computer science was more of a science but also that the industry cared a bit more about what the studies indicate. One corner of the industry is busy reinventing the broken javascript wheel every couple of weeks and the other corner is bolting more crap on Java.. but we're not ready for any kind of paradigm shift because most people don't want to learn new things and like Prime said the "best tool for the job" is just the language&framework one is the most comfortable with.

People who have impostor syndrome have a fear that they'll be exposed as "frauds" and don't believe they have earned the praise and success they have.. so it's a condition where you continue to fear it despite the constant outside evidence showing otherwise... that's why it's a syndrome. What you are talking about it just fear and self-doubt.. and that is quite normal for someone who hasn't had much positive feedback yet.

  31.  @LL-wu5ui  I understand what you mean and I agree that there are physical and mental illnesses that we simply cannot overcome at the moment and some individuals are just unlucky. However, that's besides the point that I tried to communicate. The broader problem within society is what we value. We're supposed to be happy cogs in the machine that produces more and more and consumes more and more, we define "success" in life in a way that is in the end not fulfilling. When people see through the pointlessness or break themselves in this treadmill we may try our best to treat the symptoms but we don't question the reasons which causes this growing emptiness. Dr. K talks about this too. For example, suicide rates have risen 50% during the last decade. That ought to be a clear signal. However, that is not so much of a failure of the system that tries to treat these hopeless people, it's a failure in the basic assumptions that the system/society is built on.

Most innovative people we know of weren't motivated by the profit, they wanted to research and innovate.. and be known for it. Most of the people that actually got rich and wanted it were marketers. People who want to research and innovate usually do that because 1) they're driven by the desire of knowledge and 2) they have the opportunity to do so. Please, come up with some people who invented something because they wanted to become rich.. or even some who actually did. You'll find that the majority of the people who did get rich were just the marketers, not the people who did the actual research and innovation. So, we arrive at the question, who do we want to reward? Those who do the research and innovation or those who can manipulate people the best? If we want to encourage actual research and innovation the problem is that statistically most of the people who have the intellect and capability are doing minimum wage work because they need to live and have no other real options and those who earn the most are people who were born in wealth. That's the current system, do we really think that's the best we can do? Those with most of the money want us to believe so but I don't think any objective facts support it. Currently, we reward those who want to become rich no matter the cost and they want you to believe they're the ones that drive the progression.. What if we rewarded those who actually want to make the world a better place for everyone? There are many people like that. They just don't thrive in the current system.

I would say that finding a good book or two about the subject and reading them could be a really good idea. (Good) books tend to be much more focused, comprehensive and systematic about the subject than learning tons of tidbits here and there. So, if you're like me, stop every once in a while and DO read a book.. and then put it in the practice.

After the 80s it has been driven down by the concerted efforts of the rich. The result is the most egregious income inequality in the American history and quickly eroding middle class.   40. Yup, M1 Macbook was the hardware I've been waiting for all this time. Enough power, doesn't get hot and loud, lasts for a long time. I happen to have that specific need as well. I can work for 3 days in the wilds (I'll take a small powerbank with me and that's enough). When this becomes possible with Linux I'll switch back because I do not really like macos.. but the hardware is great.

If I point a gun at you and ask for your money you'd probably agree there's not much free will in that transaction but at the same time you don't see anything less than that as coercion. People buy medication or they *will die*. People buy food and pay rent or they risk dying. People work low wage jobs because they need money for the aforementioned things. Then there are structural pressures (try to function in todays society without a phone or in many places without a car), peer pressure, ads, etc. Your will become "more free" with more money but that's just another problem with the system. Also, we probably do not actually have free will.

I have hard time keeping my own life and things sorted out so sometimes I feel like how am I even supposed to be able to help others with this shit. They earn money by playing in concerts, selling merch, patreon, making music for clients, etc. Even when their music is "stolen" they may not have means to fight it. I'm one of those damned AI programmers and just a while back I trained a system that will result in 30-40% reduction of the workforce in an accounting company. It took me just a few days to create a good enough prototype. It's not the fault of the accountants that they'll be out of job. Also, this isn't something that's coming slowly and to low-skill workers only. It's going to affect so many fields that most people can't even fathom it. Technological advancement should be something to celebrate but instead it's instilling fear and dread in people and for a good reason. We all should be a part of making this transformation better for all people not just a select few.

When I went to study in the university they offered all the courses in multiple time slots during the week and I wanted a schedule that'd suit me best.. so I built a Prolog program, fed it the time data about the courses and then I wrote a few rules (no 10-hour days, some but not too many free periods etc.) and it produced a few schedule options for me to pick from.. Prolog's pretty handy and learning it was definitely a galaxy brain experience for me.. that made me wonder what all other cool languages and paradigms were out there and oh boy did I find cool things :) But.. 20 years later I'm a bit saddened by what the current status quo is.

We could have a word for people who have never eaten beef and those who have. We would have beef-virgins and those who are not.. but how we perceive such persons and how different they are are would be pretty much entirely culture-dependent and therefore a matter of "belief". There could be a sect of vegans who'd raise such people on the pedestal and make a big deal out of how pure they are and then there would be some other people who wouldn't believe there's really any meaningful difference between those categories of people.

  81. It's still a skinner box. I think one crucial detail / conclusion of Skinner's experiment was left out. If they rewarded the test subject every time it did something, it did do it for a while but eventually get bored. But once they made the reward only appear randomly .. the test subject would often obsessively repeat that action until exhaustion, even forgoing all of its physical needs. So, once in a while, randomly, you find something in the feed that elicits an emotional response from you. It's not guaranteed but you never know what you're going to find! I've spent ungodly number of hours of my time learning things, and learning "new" things again and again (I say "new" because a lot of the old stuff just re-emerges in a new package but still requires studying). It exhausts you in the long run. Especially the cynicism that rises when you see ever increasing number of tools and abstraction layers and the whole "getting shit done" doesn't really get that much easier. I'm looking to change fields as well. I used to love coding and solving problems, these days it feels more like glueing a jigsaw puzzle together where all the pieces aren't even from the same puzzle.

As someone with diagnosed, debilitating ADHD, I think it has not served us well that people who have got conditioned (hectic life / phone / short form content) to have some similar symptoms self-identify as ADHD.. Those people need help too but it's different. My condition is neurological, I can (and have) learn some skills to cope with it but I will never be cured. There have been times when I've tried to engage with something I need to do (and even something I want to do)... I've tried and tried for hours at a time, for many days.. and my brain simply refuses to engage with it.. trying to explain that to other people is almost as frustrating as the inability itself. And that is only one the nasty things that comes with ADHD.

I was madly in love with her and helped her overcome really difficult times... but for the last few years we've been drifting apart. She's been finding her way in life again and finding new hobbies but I'm less and less involved in anything. I'm so glad she's been able to heal and get much better but at the same time I feel deep sadness.. I'm starting to realize that the sadness might be because of something I thought we would have.. but maybe it has been my imagination all along. It's been hard to accept that the beautiful togertheness didn't materialize.. I see how different we are now and it may be irreconcilable.. and my attraction has died down. When I grew older I realised that I could coerce and sway people quite easily because I could guess (and watch their reactions to confirm it) what was important to them or what they wanted to hear... didn't take long after that to realise that I had been the target of all kinds of manipulation as well and how that had affected me. So I grew very conscious (and wary) of my own manipulations and I've since tried not to do it.   233. Well, you can eat once a day and not be hungry. For me, hungriness seems to be related to blood sugar level swings. You can try to keep it steady with eating lots of small portions or changing diet to something that doesn't cause spikes and crashes. I cut carbs massively and to me the most magnificent effect was that I rarely feel the need to eat I am just not hungry. It's so liberating to not need to think about food constantly and not even having to plan your day so that there are no long gaps between meals.

We have hair cells of different lengths in our cochlea that respond to different wavelengths. Learning about programming (languages, frameworks etc) has been my passion for almost my whole life. I too thought I was hot shit when I was 18... but 25 years later I'm much more humble. There will always be a shit ton of stuff I don't know about and there's always more to learn. Not just about programming either. How to work with customers, learn domain knowledge, how to work as part of a team, how to live a healthy life... etc. Experience is valuable and you can't speedrun that. Being curious and talented helps a lot but it's not a substitute.

US on the other hand is interested in bleeding Russia as much as they can so they can weaken a major player on the arena.. China's interest is probably pretty much the same. I really really wish people would keep up this anti-war sentiment and that it would raise awareness and lead to opposition against all those barbaric attacks and humanitarian crises.   393. Regarding immutable data structures... there are languages like Koka and Roc that have optimizers for them. They check if the old version isn't used elsewhere they go and just mutate the data. It sounds like cheating but it preserves the semantics and if you actually need several versions of that data then you'd need copies anyway.. Now, error handling for all these cases is not that bad, you just need to remember to do it. What is more complex is that when something goes wrong you might want to pause for a while and then retry again, say, 3 times. It's hard to build a functioning society without common things: roads, electric network, postal service, education etc. They're almost always either funded by the public and/or subsidized by them because almost everyone needs them and many of them are natural monopolies (different companies can't build roads in the same spot).   481. I've worked on pretty sizable functional project that's in production. If you design it somewhat decently you're not going to have problems with handling side-effects. Side-effects belong to the outer layers of the architecture, most of the business logic is pure and can be in the inner layers. One of the problems with functional programming languages in the real world is that many people haven't had that much experience with them and even if they know the syntax and concepts they're still trying to translate imperative patterns into functional code (like what you described).

  485. There are interesting developments in memory management and certain optimizations though. Check out languages like Roc and Koka. They don't use garbage collection and also do very interesting optimizations regarding immutable data structures.

Look up the nice job of brake men on trains and how many of them died every year and how the companies fought against the regulations to make braking safer... I'd recommend reading up on history of companies and workers to see how far we've come and why.. and you'll find out what kind of dystopia companies would drive us into if nothing forces them to behave humanely.

  490. I have had my MacBook Pro rendered unbootable by an update.. twice. No big deal, what I hate about Apple products is how absolutely inexistential their support is for any kind of debugging and fixing their problems. It's "reset nvram" etc. and when those didn't work I couldn't find any other information other than "just reinstall the OS". I want to understand what the problem is and fix it... that's not the apple way.

  495. Yup, I've been using Linux for a long time and have no desire to move elsewhere.. but I got M1 Air because of the hardware. It's the first computer that hits the performance / noise / heat levels I want (and have been wanting for *years*). Now I just wish I could run Linux on it.. or that other hardware manufacturers would smell the coffee and understand that there are many people who do care about the heat output (and electric bills) too. I can do pretty heavy tasks with my M1 laptop sitting on my lap and it never gets hot... and it doesn't even have a fan, it's completely silent. I won't buy a new AMD/Intel -powered computer until they have an answer for this.. if Asahi gets the critical parts working before they do.. my desktop upgrade will be a Mac Studio.

  501. I got a moderately expensive Brother laser printer. Six months after the warranty expired it stopped working. I tried hard to find what was wrong with it .. and then I found other people complaining about the same problem/error on Brother forums and their answer was "hey, here are a few other models you can buy to replace it"... I was done with it. Brother is probably less shitty than HP (which isn't hard) but that left very sour taste in my mouth.

What worries me is all the people who dismiss the whole thing without even trying to understand what Effect (and similar languages/libraries) are trying to achieve and what a proper implementation in a proper language would enable them to do. Still, that's a weak point because people know the concept and how it works even if it needs to be implemented. Also, generators can be handy but I dislike using for-loop for non-generic cases because it forces me to "simulate" the loop in my head.

  543. There are ways to make adblocking on youtube really really hard (like embedding ads into the video stream and checking timing at the server end etc). I don't know how far they're willing to go. Anyway, if / when that happens that adblock doesn't work for me either, I'll stop watching youtube. I absolutely hate ads. I also know I'm in a small minority and Youtube won't miss me. Like Reddit at the moment doesn't. It makes me kinda sad that people don't care.. boycotts don't work. So, corporations will continue to do whatever the hell tthey want. Oh well, I'll go live in my cave and continue yelling at clouds.
