I came to Shanghai in 2017 cuz i always wanted to travel the world and felt stuck at my home country. Best decision I've ever made. I still managed to see an end of that golden era for laowais in China that started in 2010s when they were hiring any foreigner to be an English teacher even if he spoke almost zero English. When one laowai was a teacher in the daytime, actor on the weekend, businessman in the rest of the free time. This was a fun time and Ive met lots of unique people from literally all over the world.
But covid hit us hard in Shanghai, very humiliating, eye opening experience. Me an my wife were stuck at our apartment for months, got infected, got transfered to a covid shelter. Fences all over the city, impossibility to go abroad to see your family and come back, a need to do tests and make sure your qr code is green literally every day just to be able to go inside the grocery store or subway was just too much. We left in the fall of 2022 with a ton of stress and were happy to leave that madness behind just to realize Chinese government gave up on zero covid policy right after we left...
But I still felt more free in Canada. But no matter what I truly love China for what it gave me and what it took away, and I miss it. This country is truly remarkable, its people are one of the most generous, warm hearted, hospitable I've ever seen and i miss them. Or maybe I miss those crazy young days filled with adventures.. Great video to reminisce a bit
