8:44 I was going to bring up Hillary’s pied piper strategy. Early in the primaries, polling showed Hillary beating cruz, trump, and Rubio iirc. The only one she didn’t beat was Kasich. One (or two) of them fell within the margin of error and it was close as I recall. But Kasich polled ahead of her in head to head match ups. Probably goes without mentioning to most here who know this, but Bernie beat all of them by higher percentages than Hillary. Kasich may have been within margin of error iirc with Bernie beating him in head to head matchup. (I was following polling closely in 2016.)

@peterstafford4426 that’s totally disregarding the disillusionment of voters who saw the DNC’s clear favoritism in the primary. I think Debbie Wasserman Schulz holds a fair amount of responsibility also. There wouldn’t have been such resentment to fester and fall into “both parties are the same” rhetoric had that not happened so blatantly. Anyway the question is “should we prop up the worst candidate so it’s an easy opponent”. Maybe like Sam said it’s different when it’s done in non-presidential elections where the elements are just right for it. But Hillary’s campaign sure took a risk there and we ended up with Trump actually getting elected. Would our country have fared better if Kasich had gotten elected instead of Trump? Some could say no, because he would still promote Republican policy (and possibly more effectively, as a more respectable figure) but we also probably wouldn’t have had such a poor immediate response to covid and so many anti vaxxers and anti maskers and be having as many regular republicans falling into all this Q nonsense and openly playing footsie with fascists today. Or January 6th.

That is odd. Hillsdale college is rightwing. Usually I hear the left calling to abolish the electoral college. But there’s a secretive group lobbying for republican lawmakers to adopt the popular vote. I wonder what their angle is. Considering bush and Trump lost the popular vote, very curious.
