According to the universally respected Mikhail Gorbachev, this is basically the righting of a Soviet wrong in the first place.  Somewhere along the line when the Soviet Union fell Crimea was given to Ukraine.  Gorbachev says that never should have happened.  All the sabre-rattling has to do with the West trying to get their greedy hands on Ukrainian gas.    So far only Russia doesn't answer to international bankers.  If NATO is stupid enough to engage the Russian bear they will suffer dearly.  Most likely outcome is another "cold" war.  Ever wonder why the baddest dudes in school never fought?  It's because they know that even if one of them were to win he would most likely get really hurt in the process.  That is the USA/West vs. Russia conundrum.  Even if one side were to win, the "winner" would be in grave health.  The most NATO would do is arm a stupid, highly impressionable Ukrainian self-defense force to sacrifice themselves by fighting Russia.  Another thing for all you USA keyboard warriors to consider is that neither Iraq or Afghanistan have an air force, cruise missiles or satellite surveillance capabilities.  A war with Russia would be much more deadly.  They wouldn't fuck with IED's and suicide bombers.  They'd just carpet bomb your stupid ass.
