  1. You didn't actually boil it. I bet if you had most of that stuff would have come loose. Fresh cosmoline may melt at 130F but the old stuff has lost most of the volatile compounds leaving heavier stuff behind. And....how 'bout an old tooth brush for scrubbing things down. I find they are seemingly made for the job.
