I see Merkel wants to have a German as president of the EU commission as this would be most beneficial to Berlin. Is there any possibility she will be disappointed? Meanwhile Swedens favourite to become PM at next months elections warns the country is facing it's most serious crises ever over immigration and law and order, Italy clashes with Brussels over migrant boat demanding other EU states take more migrants and Greece is staring at it's 280 billions worth of Euro loans and being told how to run it's country while it's economic output in 2023 is still forecast to be 17% below what it was in 2007. As long as you keep paying you Greeks you'll be ok, broke but ok. Tell me again all the benefits of being in the EU I just need a little reminder.

We were lied to by our own politicians, we believed their lies because we were too complacent that our democracy would always be the answer for any problems with politics. we were unaware the EU was an attempt at empire under the ultimate control of Germany and our democracy may well have the answer to our current troubles.

Does anyone know the value of Spains exports to the UK and what effect it would have on Spains economy if it was cut by 50% because of price increases due to tarrifs. That's apart from the value of German exports which could easily be cut by 50% or more plus the loss of our financial contribution to the EU, who knows what will happen without a deal but it will be different.

Why not indeed, it makes no difference who is president providing they sing from the same hymn sheet, but who writes it? and does this mean the words need underlining.

You're right there is need to change things but the EU has shown it is incapable of change, no surprise there change involves selfless work with losses for some and gains for others. The EU has tunnel vision, it is happy with the utopian lifestyle it has created for some and out of touch with the needs of the majority. There is a disconnect between the ones who have power and those they wield power over and this looks unchangeable by debate and due process.

Humanity seems doomed to keep making the same mistakes, remember the American war of independence arose because of the British Empires inflexibility over tax on tea exports. Hopefully any war with the EU will remain verbal and only with the politicians and civil servants with a few minor economic skirmishes.

Then why has the EU lent them 300billion Euros which they don't have a cat in hells chance of repaying? Just good business?

Greece was better off before it joined the EU.

Whatever you think about the EU is not making my quality of life better but that does not matter we will soon have left to begin a new chapter in Britains existence. Think on.

Thankfully democracy affords a nobody like me the opportunity to participate in decisions affecting my future time will reveal if my view is correct. Good luck to you too, we all need a bit of that.

If companies in Greece could afford to pay higher wages it would make sense for them to do so, austerity doesn't seem to have been destructive to the UK's economy if you think that is what we have had.

ginlane, what exactly is it better than?

But surely you don't think Britains progress over the last 40yrs is all due to EU membership. It is impossible to know what the UK would be today if we had not been in the EU, interest rate fluctuations you talk about were a result of EU membership and our EU loving duplicitous politicians attempting to get us to have the Euro. The EU seemed like a good idea at the time to us but was not thoroughly examined and not made clear to us that the long term goal was a united states of Europe with a total loss of autonomy for former nation states. This goal seems unachievable to me and is any way undesirable to me. There are no doubt benefits to be had from organised cooperation of European countries without the need for a single overarching authority which just creates more problems than advantages for too many countries, leading to an insulated cosseted elite having no respect for their people.
