It's all so inevitable and the root cause is it is based on socialist principles which never work for long, they used to say that nursing and doctoring was a vocation rather than a career. How do you square that with the attitude of the doctors today retiring because they have reached the limit of their tax free pension allowance. When I used to go the GP we would have something in common which gave the chance for a little conversation and better communication now it's usually a totally alien experience which I only undertake as a last resort which probably means a trip to A&E next time as the last time I went for an appointment it was nearly 3 weeks wait.

At least 25 of the 28 economies in the EU have lower GDP and higher debt ever closer union means we must eventually have the Euro, harmonised tax rates, a common defence structure and transfers of capital from the richer states to the poorer for the purposes of investment, and public spending to attempt to equal out disparities and have a realistic currency value in all states. This inevitably means an averaging down of living standards for the average person in the richer countries because there is no way economic growth can increase fast enough to keep pace with the changes needed especially with the drive to reduce emissions to halt climate change. This of course is not a problem for the secure upper middle level and above as far as they can see but even if they are correct the lack of disregard for fellow countrymen is eyewatering.

We do need close cooperation and multi lateral agreements with our European neighbours for our mutual benefit, isolationism is as unsuitable as empire for modern economies to thrive. People do not define themselves or base their identity on anything, they are the product of their environment, culture, education and experience. Your opinion that it's a dog eat dog world is accurate enough it's just that the EU is not the answer, by trying to force diverse cultures into homogeneous states you are working against human nature. There is nothing wrong with the ideology it's humanity that is the problem and the sooner this is realised the sooner progress will commence. Democracy is the only system that is acceptable in an advanced society and only works where there is sufficient commonality amongst it's paticipants in my opinion. If I am correct there could be some worrying times ahead for Turkey.

  308.  @ericohm9474  I've heard a few comments from Italian medics who have mentioned a certain percentage of patients requiring I C and or ventilators, the NHS must surely have info on vunerable people and anyone over 70 should know they are at risk. Such people should have the choice of self isolation or be offered isolation by the government, we must have the ways and means. I don't know but it seems the majority of people with the virus don't need hospital care and if they restricted their movement to essential trips only and made themselves identifiable as infected in some way so people could act appropriately I think problems would be minimised. The only other big problem I can see would be managing international and inter European travel which would need to be banned from unreliable or uncooperative countries which would I imagine be few given every countries need to trade.

  333. @bucketsandshims Riddle me this the BBC have just run a news story to say that British refineries will be unable to export their petrol refined from North sea oil to the EU due to the tariffs they will impose while at the same time the UK will not put tariffs on petrol imports making said refineries unviable. How is that we have to import petrol and export petrol, if we stopped importing electric cars and carried on producing cars with combustion engines would we not have a plentiful supply of petrol that could even be subsidised to benefit the economy?

Scotland on the other hand I think would just have severe economic troubles with a hard UKexit, so many changes to fund such as new currency, border infrastructure, severe cuts to government spending to meet EU entry qualification if that's what they want. They would have some bargaining chips such as coastal waters and a percentage of the oil and gas output from the North Sea after a long process of litigation not forgetting of course the loss of all UK government jobs and infrastructure expense in Scotland and a big hit to their significant financial sector which currently benefits from trading links with London. Ireland I imagine would not have quite such a tough time but the former North Ireland would be a bit of a basket case for you to sort out as I think I heard 75% of it's exports go to the UK. Why would Ireland need an army no reason as the whole of the world loves you (is that why the IRA operates with impunity), though the EU will I expect every state to make it's contribution to the EU army especially with the growing discontent in EU states looking likely to increase hugely (yellow vests nicely simmering and Italy talking of ditching the Euro). The old problems money and corruption the EU has in bucket loads and a lack of shims.

  480. Too many people don't understand the effect of debt, whatever you borrow has to be paid back plus the interest. Borrow £1k at 20% apr and you have to pay £16.66 a month just to keep the debt from getting bigger so if that £1k isn't earning you £16.66 a month you're worse off than before you borrowed it. Can you believe some people borrow money at 500% so they would need to earn £416.66 a month to be not worse off and still have to pay the £1k back. Obviously people can go bankrupt and be destitute turn to crime or do lots of other things, but when governments go bankrupt there is no safety net if they cannot show they have the ability to turn the country around then you get problems like Venezuela where prices double every month. They are real people, Venezuela is a real country with the largest oil reserves in the world they just elected a government that didn't understand debt.

Unfortunately for China they are trying to ride two horses with different destinations which is impossible but will make for an interesting denouement, hopefully not too cataclysmic. The attempted coalition of Russia and China will be a difficult trick to pull off.

I think if the EU is to survive it is unavoidable given the disparity in economic performance of the constituent economies that have the Euro. Inevitably this will mean a one government state for all members with harmonised interest rates, tax rates legal systems, defence force etc. It is inconceivable that the UK can continue in it's current position and will have to adopt the Euro at some time and accept direct rule from whatever body is constituted to run the state, be it democratic or dictatorship. Personally I would prefer something on the the lines of the USA system if we are intimidated enough to remain. As long as people can see this is the only viable future for the EU when they choose to remain then we must accept our fate.

I think life will get worse for me if we continue to remain and will improve after we leave, timescales are impossible to forecast. Just listen to them start to change their tune now that project fear has failed, a deal will give them breathing space to reform the EU and prepare to downsize the Euro zone if they have the necessary intelligence and best intentions. Russia doesn't have the wealth to interfere in the mess that would be created, America would probably be the biggest beneficiary and the biggest help but how bad things would have to get before this would be acceptable to Europe is anybodies guess, a sovereign UK would be in a good position to influence events if we had good enough leaders.
