There is absolutely no cogent reason to send humans to Mars, or even to the Moon other than crass consumerism, arrogant egotism, or competitive politics, which are all bad reasons!
Besides, the major developed countries of the world capable of launching spacecraft are so deep in debt they can't afford a child's plastic Gemini Atlas model rocket!
All space exploration can be done by robotics. In our solar system there are no planets, planetoids or moons habitable within the Goldilocks zone. Dead ... is ... dead.
The claim that we need a human lifeboat/space colony in case of a astronomical or other human-caused apocalyptic hit (supervolcano eruption, nuclear war, massive meteor strike, gamma ray burst, etc.) on the Earth is false because self-sustaining international survival stations can be built 2 miles deep in tunnels or at the bottom of the sea.
There is reason to build a moon base (which can also be run by robotics) if it becomes feasible to mine helium-3 to be brought back to Earth to be combined with deuterium in a carbon-free radiation-free D--He-3 fusion nuclear reactor.
Save Earth first.
