  1. There is zero reasons to send humans to Mars. Many for robotic exploration/exploitation only. All efforts should be on a moon base to mine and return helium-3 a component for carbon free nuclear fusion energy production. Save Earth first. A gamma ray burst would hit Mars too, so build deeply buried survival pods miles below the Earth where humans could survive till safe to surface. US $20 trillion in debt, cannot afford cheap plastic model rocket.

  2. There is absolutely no cogent reason to send humans to Mars, or even to the Moon other than crass consumerism, arrogant egotism, or competitive politics, which are all bad reasons! Besides, the major developed countries of the world capable of launching spacecraft are so deep in debt they can't afford a child's plastic Gemini Atlas model rocket! All space exploration can be done by robotics. In our solar system there are no planets, planetoids or moons habitable within the Goldilocks zone. Dead ... is ... dead. The claim that we need a human lifeboat/space colony in case of a astronomical or other human-caused apocalyptic hit (supervolcano eruption, nuclear war, massive meteor strike, gamma ray burst, etc.) on the Earth is false because self-sustaining international survival stations can be built 2 miles deep in tunnels or at the bottom of the sea. There is reason to build a moon base (which can also be run by robotics) if it becomes feasible to mine helium-3 to be brought back to Earth to be combined with deuterium in a carbon-free radiation-free D--He-3 fusion nuclear reactor. Save Earth first.
