  1. Ray would carry year round. There's a la nina winter coming up. In your area you'll probably get a regular to above average winter, but could be a mild one, and the bears could be out early and hungry. I would carry 'bear spray' TOO. There are specific recommendations when hiking in bear country with a dog that could suddenly go after the bear cubs, separate them from the mother, and then disaster occurs.
