I'd place 24-48" galvanized chicken wire around the base to deter groundhogs, opossums, etc., that would love to gnaw through and mow down an entire garden overnight.
You can make a great removable compost pile fencing by taking 36 inch tall one quarter inch hardware cloth, forming it into a 4-ft diameter cylinder by wiring the cut ends together. Alternate "browns" with "greens," sprinkle with some poultry-based blood meal, water well and turn over every two weeks.
Speaking of water ... where is your water source? That might have been the most critical very first thing to do before building anything.
