The guy who surrendered, Ruslan Anitin saw the suicide and it's possible he just lost all the sense to continue fighting and just give himself up after seeing a horrifying thing.

It looks like he walks over the bodies of dead Ukrainians and destroyed Ukrainian armor though, which indicates a failed attack on their trench. Apparently, the Ukrainian decided to clear the trenches using drone dropped grenades, very cowardly. But I highly doubt Ruslan is telling the truth of his situation considering the fact that his Ukrainian captors might told him to say certain things or face punishment.
