  1. Are the "rules of the game" the same for brokerage firms as they are for banks? It's quite possible that the rules would be different.... at least in the case of a brokerage firm that does not allow for check writing privileges; that is, if the brokerage firm REQUIRES that the customer ALSO have a bank account in order to access his money, then it would seem that the government (of the host country) would be willing to allow foreigners to readily open a brokerage account.... even if that same government is hostile to foreigners who endeavor to open a BANK account. If this analysis is correct, then a brokerage account would be the way to go (where large amounts of cash are involved); who wants to have a million dollars sitting around idle anyway?
