Yeah, sometimes I think about renouncing my citizenship, and then living in California as an illegal alien. As a "foreigner" (at least on paper) living in the US, I could retain my brokerage accounts, and then pay no capital gains taxes; I could have a California driver's license; I could even vote in US elections. On top of that, Biden is probably going to legalize all the illegal aliens, so I could get my citizenship back... and then renounce a second time if I wanted to.

@DanTheQueasy-Fisherman Depends what you mean by "illegal". I think it's unlikely that the US government will get to the point where it is actually putting people in prison merely for owning bitcoin. But if the US government ever does get to that point, it'll be because it has otherwise become highly tyrannical and despotic.... in which case, the decision about whether to own cryptocurrency would be the least of everyone's concerns.

@DanTheQueasy-Fisherman The US government will eventually adopt a CBDC; I don't doubt that. Potentially, it'll be "programmable money"; but also a vehicle by which the government can spy on people. As such, there'll continue to be demand for privately produced digital currencies that are not under government control.

@DanTheQueasy-Fisherman Depends exactly what you mean by "control". The government of a given country cannot stop its residents from buying or using cryptocurrency.... UNLESS that government is willing to actually put people in prison for using it. As bad as the US government may be at this point, it's a long, long way from that sort of draconian policy.
