@andrewhewerdine Not true. The IRS will tax unrealized capital gains; and they'll tax IRA accounts (which may be conceptualized as a tax on an imputed withdrawal). But there is no "tax on assets" per se.

@andrewhewerdine OK; but if, for example, a person had $100 million in assets, but unrealized capital gains of just $5 million (i.e., an overall basis cost of $95 million), then he'd only owe capital gains tax on that $5 million; and so his overall tax... for this hypothetical... would be only about one million dollars.
