As I heard one tax adviser explain it, there are three categories of states (from the perspective of expats): the good, the bad, and the ugly. The sole member of the "ugly" category is California.

@supermonk3y07 I know... BUT, if your goal is to establish residency in a given US state... and to THEN live in a foreign country, residency in Texas would be perfectly OK. One could just rent an apartment there (and, of course, if the stay outside the US were to be very lengthy, one could just stop paying rent in Texas altogether).

@stevesinglenomad5683 California and Virginia are "tax friendly" for US citizens who want to go live in a foreign country? No way.

Yeah, although Washington does have an estate tax... so I'm not sure what would happen there in the event of a death.
