@dickielarue1451 My understanding is that a US citizen can move to PR from one of the 50 states.... and that he can maintain Puerto Rican tax residency with A LOT LESS THAN 6 months residency per year.... as long as he spends little or no time in any of the 50 states. So, a US citizen could get all the tax benefits of PR, while spending very little time there.... as long as he spends most of his time outside of BOTH Puerto Rico AND the 50 states. For a person who's facing a 35% federal income tax, and a 10% state income tax, it could make a lot of sense to become a tax resident of PR, but to then spend most of his time in some other country.

None of this will pass this year; but it is very probable that there will be a significant increase in the "death tax" in coming years; probably it'll happen after the 2024 Presidential election (if not before). So yes, wealthy people should have a 2nd passport, if they want their heirs to get their money.... rather than the likes of Bernie Sanders.

@Dividenddream Democrat politicians in the US may try to "bribe" the residents of Puerto Rico somehow; hell, it might not take much more than sending each resident of P.R. a check for $2000.

@dickielarue1451 For SOME people, the tax benefits are sufficient to outweigh the disadvantages.

@dickielarue1451 No; only a small number of Americans can benefit; they've got to be in a high tax bracket (to make it worth the move), and they've got to either own a business that can be readily relocated to PR, or else they've got to be making their money from investing or trading. So it's only a small number of people. [FWIW, I've never been to Puerto Rico myself].
