Of the journalists who mention gold revaluation, virtually all are limiting themselves to the idea of revaluing to the current price ($2900 or so); but that, if done, would have NO EFFECT whatsoever on the debt problem. To really put a dent in the problem, gold would have to be revalue to $30K ... if not $100K.

  2. @bubbajones4522  your arithmetic may very well be correct; but a "gold standard" isn't really necessary; if gold were revalued to $50,000/ounce, the US debt problem would be GREATLY alleviated, and moreover, the US would no longer be in a state of "fiscal dominance", i.e., the Fed's policy tools would then become very effective at fighting inflation.

  3. @myview1875  no, not exactly. Let's say they revalue the gold to $100,000/ounce (for example). The Treasury would then be able to buy back a large portion of the debt; in addition, tax receipts would SURGE ... in nominal terms. So yes, the debt-to-GDP ratio would fall dramatically. The problem would be, of course, that inflation would increase dramatically.

Only a small fraction of the existing US debt can be blamed on Biden.... but Biden & his team fukked up in many ways, particularly by provoking Russia into war (rather than negotiating a settlement) and by seizing Russian assets (not to mention that Biden & his backers stole the 2020 election to begin with).

  8. I disagree. Some sort of BRICS payment system could be devised for resolving trade deficits; the trade deficits could be resolved once a year... once a month... or even once a day; point being that the amount of money involved could be small enough that trust wouldn't be an issue.

  9. Also, Trump has to do everything he can to maximize his vote count, because there's going to be election fraud in a few of the swing states (certainly mass fraud in Michigan).
