Months before their death, Shei told Boursicot that they still loved him... This is more a Romeo and Juliet story than it is a spy thriller, I'm afraid

It was a time when being gay was still very taboo. It's sad, but I think this is a bit of a cover story — nobody could go that long and not realize the physical reality of the situation. It somehow made more sense to claim ignorance over 20 years than it did to just admit to being queer. He even attempted to hurt himself in his humiliation, and only revealed that he was bi much later in '93 — a cruel reminder of the pressures still facing LGBTQIA+ people to this very day. And yet people will still hurl su*cide stats at trans people as if it reflects upon them rather on the inhumanity of their culture... In the end, this was a love story more than it was a spy story. And love, as they say, is love

Love is real, the state is a myth One day subterfuge and nationalism will get out of the way and we can go back to bonobo

@Ami Even better, if we're admitting it isn't a gendered thing to begin with: Even in betrayal, a human being must be a human being. It was humanity that made him fall in love and raise a child he knew was not his, a common humanity we all share

That's less a twist and more the tragedy at the heart of this entire love story. Even more than international espionage, it was homophobia that ruined his life and led him to attempt to end that life

@EVVT Race is a myth, a (I'm gonna say it) social construct. Sure there are some differences between our phenotypes, but "race" implies that the differences observed in our bodies and societies constitute something far more "other" than they really are. There's a reason talk of "race" separate from "ethnicity" or "nation" didn't come to be until the 18th century AD

@ComicGladiator When I said it in the shower, everyone clapped! Nah but fr I don't really see how it makes more sense that I'd write something like that for accolades rather than because I genuinely thougnt that way, of course

@TRR901 What a desperate attempt to say something servile lol

@Zuntata Are women who've had a hysterectomy not women anymore? Are castrated men no longer men? It clearly takes more than balls to make a man, or a womb to make a woman. I don't know whether Shei identified as woman or man, but in the end, what difference does it make to you and me if it didn't make a difference to the person Shei was romantically involved with? Making a big deal out of that aspect of the story is exactly what led our French boy to attempt to end his life, just like what happens to trans people all the time — it isn't a mental illness, it's the burden of a cruel and unkind society. Let us not reenact that cruelty
