The Soviets were "tankies" and they saved the world from the Nazis with those tanks. Routing imperialism and quashing counter-revolution is something that 100% of states do, but when a socialist country does it, boom, "tankies", immediately dismissed. The American Whiskey Rebellion? Also, the inflated figures for Mao invariably include the landlord class who actively fought the communists, treating them as if they were comparable to victims of the holocaust when they were more like enemy combatants than victims

"Tankie" is useless in the mouths of people actually engaging with dialectical materialism or Marxism, even when, say, denouncing the use of lethal force against unarmed dissidents

It also has virtually notjing to do with tanks or violence, and everything to do with communism. The USA is the world's largest user of tank violence, but somehow supporting the US army isn't the stuff of a tankie — on the other hand, anyone who supports the use of tanks against such imperialism is automatically a "tankie" in the eyes of those who use the word. It's just a generic Red Scare ad hominem

One's country of origin doesn't change how the word "tankie" is used in common discourse by people looking to do nothing more than besmirch socialists because they are socialist, a use you seem now to be confirming. We've mentioned the most funded military organization on earth, the US imperial military, but US policing is itself the 3rd most funded armed force on the planet (including fleets of APCs), and it kills thousands of its own citizens every year — yet you don't hear their supporters being called "tankies". The word is an utterly hollow right wing insult, and only pretends to have meaning beyond base anti-communism

The question of whether the 1933-1934 Great Famine constituted a genocide is one that is ill-settled historically, but genocide or not, there is no need to pretend that the consequences of rapid and forced collectivization were not far more severe than anyone should be comfortable with when considering future programs, given the knowledge that we have now. On the other hand, it also cannot be denied how important the incredible development of industry was in staving off Nazism. Only the most blackhearted fascist would have preferred the Russian, Ukrainian, and other Soviet peoples to be systematically executed by the Germans in an unmitigated genocide in its purest form, as so many were in fact subject to before the Germans were ultimately expelled. Tankie is a word used by anti-communists from both the Right and the Left to denounce literally every socialist experiment that wasn't crushed by bourgeois imperialism within a year, even experiments which gained power without bloody revolutions. Thomas Sankara was a beautiful soul who came to power in a bloodless coup, but I've been called 'tankie' for denouncing his execution at the hands of CIA-backed reactionaries. Violence isn't a 'tankie' phenomenon, and those who wield that word will inevitably justify any number of violent means of maintaining the conspicuously anti-socialist status quo despite the moral high ground they nebulously claim
