This idea of encoding (or "discovering") powerful sigils and then tapping into their potency by storing them deep within the mind reminds me a lot of the Caryll Runes found in Bloodborne, a game heavily steeped in Gothic and Lovecraftian occultism. The idea of "vacuity" of mind being a purer form of consciousness which leaves one more open to communion with greater cosmic powers is also explicitly present in the game. Very interesting―I knew little about Spare, so this was quite enlightening. Thank you, as always!

Bloodborne is a Japanese-developed game with Lovecraftian themes, it is not an extension of the man's actual universe, it doesn't contain any of his (often racist) creations, and if anything, its use of the misogynistic elements sort of inherent to the sub-genre come off as horrifically subversive to that prejudice rather than affirming it. Race itself plays almost no role in the game, but again, if anything, the monsters are made out not to be the villagers and the common people, but the warped church authorities themselves, which is something of an inversion of the typical Lovecraftian mold once more. I'm not out to apologize for any sort of white supremacy, indeed I am always out to condemn it. But I do feel that at a certain point, calling all Lovecraftian horror, even the stuff that has nothing to do with H. P. himself and lacks the traditional prejudices, is a bit like calling all magical school literature inherently transphobic. Neither Lovecraft nor Rowling have that kind of power over an entire sub-genre that doesn't draw directly from their work. I think we can absolutely distance ourselves from a century-old bigot's bigotry while standing by Bloodborne as a masterpiece subversive to prejudice. Also, fuck your curse. I've done nothing to deserve it, and besides, any spirit worth a pinch of salt would know better than to obey it based upon such wild ignorance

  6.  @slmille4  ​ I think it's difficult to extract something like Lovecraft's actual beliefs regarding materialism from individual quotes without much in the way of context. He doesn't really come off as much of an academic, so it occurs to me that more quotable lines from him might be easily attributed with greater meaning in a scholarly sense than he ever actually intended, especially given the grandiose quality of his writing style

Sort of an inverse of the "Don't reject mysticism out of hand" going on here: Don't reject the perspective of those for whom "Visions" and "Revelations" are treated as dreams or thoughts, people who don't regard the machinations of their mind to be divinely inspired rather than entirely material in nature. "Open heart" is honestly vapid in its meaning here, or if it does mean anything, I am reminded of the old saying, "Keep an open mind, but not so open your brain falls right out."

  8. That's crazy, I was watching this and halfway through I was like "You know, maybe I should try to find a copy of Eternal Darkness." I rented it from Blockbuster twice as a kid and got too scared to continue both times lol. I remember playing it home alone around October at night, and then renting it again when my cousin was babysitting while my parents were out of town. Seeing this comment confirms it, I'll have to check my local Another Castle game shop

Zooming out to "playing the guitar" isn't what is meant, what is meant is in that case would be the manner in which you play the guitar, which does indeed change as one improves
