Alot of the terms in Australia used to be like UK but over generations has changed more like usa Same with the designs of homes was more UK now becoming usa two storey box's condo style ugly to me and knocking down old style to put minimum two properties in same space But very earlier settlements was square with full verandah around all four corners to keep heat off houses Also one main hall way with all rooms off to either side this was so you open doors and windows the air flows down the middle of the house The very early homes had out house which is a dunny or toilet in back yard separate from main house also laundries where separate from house in yard like a shed and kitchen where separate from homes The reason they where separate was early dunny toilets where drop toilets as no plumbing those days Also kitchen and laundry was separate from main home because of fire risk to the main homes due to cooked on fire and same billed water for washing on fire in what used to be a copper tub
