I think one difference between East Asian (Japan, Korea…) and western “lost generation” is the education pressure that were put on East Asian kids from very young age in school and the let down right afterwards if not get into good college/job vs in the developed western countries the depression starts mostly in at middle age. As a second generation American (parents from Asia) I still see much optimism from young people that didn’t do well in school. Of course I might be wrong and it might be different for many people/situations.

I think the US Gex X (which I am one of) is still much more optimistic then in Japan because the Japanese put so much emphasis on education at young age so if can’t get immediately into good college/job they are much more depressed. Americans for better or worse usually gets depressed at middle age.

If your wife Japanese? Only ask because in Japan immigration is usually very hard from what I’ve heard. I would think Japan/Canada housing should be similar in that cities very expensive but rural areas much cheaper.
