Without tipping I think most people that work in the restaurant industry (except high end places) would be getting paid a lot less (especially in California where they get paid minimum wage plus tips) just like most jobs that do not require an education. You won’t heard of college educated waiter/waitress still working at restaurants since the pay is better.
