France is one of the rare nation to still have an openly socialist party who was ruling not so long ago. Don't forget that the french did not have to live through the DDR for decades so they are fascinated by socialism. The green party is rather unecessary in France since the country runs on clean energy, also to note the centre and left wing parties are already including the vast majority of the green party political claims.

He did not give enough free money to the "poor", not enough free housing, not enough free public services. And he only relieved one million poor citizens from paying taxes while they all wanted 5% of the french to pay for everything in the country. In short, he was not far left enough.
