  1. America was always divided (use diverse, if that sounds better to you). The issue is not unity. The issue is how to reconcile diverging goals in a civilized way. The USA has lost this ability to a large extent. It is not the prevailing fault of liberals or conservatives. It is an overarching failure of US civilization. Unless a vast majority of Americans will recognize that failure, the chances to regain that crucial skill are slim.
