  5.  @InternetMoneyPE  Thanks for trying. Well, they did have a government and however unpopular it was we are made to believe that it was clearly preferable to Taliban rule. And the government disbanded only after not being defended, not the other way round. The issue of not being paid / fed properly can be a small element of the puzzle, yet not one big enough to fill the yawning gap: We are talking about government Armed Forces of 300,000 persons with full air superiority versus 75,000 Taliban troops. Regarding the all-important motivation of the Afghan Armed Forces- if they really deemed the Taliban threat to be a matter of life and death then the issue of being paid in time (or even being paid at all) should not have been decisive.

While it is known that the only country entitled to pursue its own interests is the USA. Be it in a country neighboring to Russia, be it on the other side of the world. You do remember Blackwater mercenaries in the Iraq, don't you ?

  9.  @herbertusfrohlich2079  Indeed. My guess is that it is the relatively modern city people of Kabul who do not like the Taliban. But that the rest of the country is OK with them.

  10. What many British do not grasp is that the EU is a deeply emotional enterprise for many Germans. For them the EU is a way to overcome the centuries long hostility between Germany and France - and this was achieved indeed. On a more general level Germans see the EU as a way to overcome the danger of nationalism, which they deem to be inherent in the nation state concept. Given their particular history this view is understandable. However they are mistaken is to think that other nations think alike.

  12.  @whiterabbitt2002  LOL Sure, there was no taking of land by Israel. None, never, even if Ben Gurion, one of Israel's founders, has proclaimed this necessity. And sure, there was no attempt to expand NATO right into Russia's backyard. No, none, whatsoever. And no, there are no articles of US intellectuals, that NATO's mission after the Soviet Union has collapsed shall turn into breaking up Russia.

  15.  @InternetMoneyPE  The USA does support countries which are breeding grounds for terrorism since many decades. Namely Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. Americans always look out for the good guys. However in some regions of the world there are no truly good guys.

  16.  @hamidhamidi3134  Your first paragraph is not very convincing. The Afghan Air Force had 210 aircraft. The Taliban zero. That the Afghan Army had no intelligence in their own country would be very astonishing. And we are not talking about conquering Taliban regions, which would be very hard in asymmetric warfare indeed. But about defeating their attacks on other regions and Kabul. Second paragraph: The weakening of the Northern alliance is a new topic, thanks. I will dig into that.

  17. No further voting on a deal already rejected. No chance to produce a new (and supposedly) better meaningful deal - neither in one week, nor in two months nor in one year. "No Brexit without a deal" is merely a wish, as the UK parliament cannot unilaterally stop Brexit nor force the EU to agree to a better deal. So the only realistic options are to ask the EU for a long postponement and have new elections / a new PM, or a hard Brexit. All this is a political crisis - but by not a constitutional one.
