  1. What many British do not grasp is that the EU is a deeply emotional enterprise for many Germans. For them the EU is a way to overcome the centuries long hostility between Germany and France - and this was achieved indeed. On a more general level Germans see the EU as a way to overcome the danger of nationalism, which they deem to be inherent in the nation state concept. Given their particular history this view is understandable. However they are mistaken is to think that other nations think alike.
