  1. The relevant question is the perception of the Russian elites and Russians at large. Quite probably securing and enlarging access to the Black (and Azov) Sea, getting Ukraine's NATO entry off the table and incorporating its Eastern regions (which have seceded in 2014 already) will be perceived as success by many Russians. But even from a Western perspective - if Russia's advance, modest as it might be, amounts to losing, what is the proper term for the debacles in Vietnam, in the Iraq, in Afghanistan ? Regarding the costs many Western commentators make the mistake of applying their standards (like own military killed, kill ratios, impact on the economy) to Russian mentality. This mistake has a long history. Hence the repeated misconceptions about somehow breaking up Russia. Which nowadays would be (at least) a proliferation nightmare on a global scale.
